The Gut-Skin Axis: Could Your Bloating Be Behind Your Breakouts?

The Gut-Skin Axis: Could Your Bloating Be Behind Your Breakouts?

If you’ve been struggling with persistent acne, eczema, or psoriasis and have tried every topical treatment under the sun, it might be time to look inward—specifically, at your gut. The gut-skin axis is a powerful but often overlooked connection that plays a significant role in skin health. Anytime I have a client who comes to me with chronic skin issues, I immediately think “gut”.

  • The Gut-Skin Axis: The gut and skin communicate through what’s known as the gut-skin axis. When your gut bacteria are balanced and your gut lining is healthy, inflammation is kept at bay, which promotes clear, healthy skin. But when gut health is compromised, it can lead to systemic inflammation that manifests on the skin as acne, rosacea, or eczema.

  • Leaky Gut and Skin Flare-Ups: Leaky gut can result in the release of inflammatory substances that affect your entire body, including your skin. When the gut lining is weakened, it allows toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammatory responses that can show up as breakouts, rashes, or chronic skin conditions.

Focusing on your gut health might just be the key to clearer, healthier skin and is truly the first essential step to take if you want clear skin. Topical treatments can only reach so far, and whilst necessary for healing and hydration, they don’t fix why you have these skin issues in the first place. Your acne is not a Roaccutane deficiency.

Addressing the gut can help reduce inflammation and support the microbiome, creating a ripple effect that shows up in a glowing complexion.
