Is Your Gut the Missing Link to Your Hashimoto’s?
So, you’ve been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s? And I can bet you’ve been told that there is nothing you can do to fix your thyroid antibodies and that you’ll be on medication for life?
Am I right? This is a common discussion I have with many of my clients - they want an alternate to the standard medical advice, but don’t quite know where to go or what to do that will truly shift the needle in their favour.
You might be surprised to learn that the missing piece of your thyroid puzzle could be your gut health.
While thyroid dysfunction is often addressed through medication in the mainstream paradigm the role of the gut in thyroid health is frequently overlooked. Each and every patient who I chat with, if they are coming to me with a Hashimoto’s diagnosis, I am assessing their gut.
Leaky Gut and Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders
Leaky gut, or increased intestinal permeability, allows undigested food particles and toxins to pass through the gut lining into the bloodstream. This can trigger the immune system, potentially leading to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Research suggests that a compromised gut barrier could be an early step in developing or exacerbating autoimmune thyroid conditions. In short, leaky gut is part of your autoimmune disease. Alongside genetics and other triggers which can be heavy metals, viruses, mould, environmental chemicals, breast implants, root canals and mercury fillings.
Addressing your gut health isn’t just for easing bloating or digestive discomfort; it’s an essential step in supporting overall thyroid health.
